Pakistan Summer Survival Guide: What to Do During a Heatstroke

As summer has arrived in recent years, a succession of record-high temperatures has started, raising the likelihood of heatstroke on a global scale. The month of this past saw a number of fatalities.

When does heat stroke occur?

Heat stroke is an exceedingly severe and occasionally fatal condition. When it happens, that’s when! While participating in physical activity in a warm atmosphere. The rate at which your body absorbs heat is slower while you’re outside or in harsh sunshine. The core temperature can climb to 41 degrees Celsius in as little as ten to fifteen minutes.
At these extraordinarily high temperatures, our body’s temperature regulation system swiftly hits its limit, rendering cooling off an impossibility.

Feelings of lethargy, vertigo, headache, and partial or complete unconsciousness are all indicators of heat stroke. It may also cause seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and low blood pressure. Heat stroke can begin in one to six hours and result in death in less than 24 hours if not handled effectively.

Emergency measures

When indications of a heat stroke arise, contact the emergency services immediately. During this period, the sick person should be moved away from the sun and heat and into a cool or gloomy area. The body should be cooled as soon as possible using cold or freezing water and wet clothes.

Furthermore, if possible, give the victim as much hydration as possible. If there is too much clothing on your body, remove it immediately.

Similarly, if the person is unconscious but breathing normally, place him or her in a box until emergency doctors come. During this time, it is crucial to regularly assess one’s breathing and consciousness. If the person is not breathing normally, touch the chest occasionally to restore breathing.

The quickest and most efficient way to avoid heat stroke is to limit direct sun exposure, particularly in the afternoon. Wear a light-colored hat and stay hydrated with water or juice. An adult man requires at least half a liter of extra water on hot days.
