It’s officially that time again: fashion’s biggest night of the year—the Met Gala—is just weeks away. Always delivering the most show-stopping red carpet fashion, this year’s Met Gala will be a religious event—quite literally—as the theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s next Costume Institute exhibit is, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Yes, the 2018 Met Gala will be tackling the influence of Catholicism in fashion—which is sure to stir up some controversy on the red carpet. What that means in practice is that Catholic art and architecture alike are defined by this two-level consciousness.

The Met Gala formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. Each year, celebrities are chosen to serve as the event’s honorary chairs.
